1. The Fourth Article I read was the one in the For Strength of Youth Pamphlet. I felt that I needed to freshen up my memory of what was written there in preparation for addressing this subject next week.
2. This was a good review for me. I need to update the filters on all our family computers and then review their use with the family.
3. I have always been very tough on these matters. Even when we had a home office, the requirement was that the door to the room remain open at all times and that I go in and out of the room often so that there was a chance to see if anything was not right.
I speak out whenever and where ever I am on these matters. I speak often of the dangers I have experienced and how I protect myself and my family. We speak often on these matters in our family meetings
4. Like in 3, I do all I can to make sure that I am aware of what is happening and of what I can do to influence friends and family and students to choose the right. When a student sent a pornograph site invitation to me, I let the school know and informed them of the legal requirement that his parents must know that he did so.
Let Our Voices Be Heard
1. Our biggest challenge is to decide 'wisely what we will listen to and watch'.
2. a. hold family councils and decide what our family chooses to do
b. spend quality time with our children
c. make our own good choices and set the example
d. limit time spent on video and tv and all other technology
e. use filters and programming locks.
f. keep all computers and tv in common rooms
g. watch the media with our children and discuss what we are seeing and what our choices are.
3. A teacher can only teach the children that there are delightful, as well as dangerous places to go on the internet. A teacher can reinforce feelings of discomfort and the children's desire to avoid those feelings. There is not much a teacher can do in the way of using consequences for poor choices on the student's part. However, the teacher can share information with parents on how to do consequences. One of the best ways to do this is to encourage parents to attend Love and Logic classes, such as those offered by the Jordan School District.
Provident Living Gidelines regarding Internet Safety
1. We have been over this so many times in RS. I follow all of them.
2. I intend to use this in a discussion with my husband and my IT who is my son in college. Then we will have a FHE on this matter. It will be in DEC, after finals are over.
Technology and a House of Learning
1. I have found that a central room for the family to use computers in is a very powerful thing. We had to move it couple of time till we found the right place in our home. It was a source on contention until it found its home. This has to do with how much electrical power flows though the room as well as spiritual energy. We have a friend addicted to porn and his wife does not yet know because he keeps his computer private, supposedly for work, at home.
2. Right now, I feel like I need to review this article with my husband. I think it was in the BYU Alumni magazine? I will make sure he has seen it and gives my his opinion on how we are doing. So far, we have had many good experiences helping our children make good choices and deal with times when their choices have led to exposure to things that made them angry because they did not want to be where they found themselves on the internet. The greatest help has been to keep an ad blocker on all family computers as well as on all work related computers.
